· What do you like about it?
Utilitarianism appeals because of straightforward and outcome-based approach to ethics. It focuses on maximizing happiness and making decisions based on benefit for greatest number of people.
· What do you dislike about it?
The downside of utilitarianism is justification for unethical actions as long as it benefits majority (Stevenson, 2021). It could lead to neglecting minority rights and justify harmful actions like lying and coercion that depends on end result that is greater happiness for people.
· How could you apply it in real life?
Utilitarianism can be applied in decisions related to resource allocation like healthcare. In case of pandemic, distributing vaccines can help to maximize public health is the utilitarian approach.
2. Rights
· What do you like about it?
The Rights theory focuses on individual freedoms and protections. It is important for safety against tyranny and oppression. It includes values like personal autonomy and ensures that basic rights like freedom of speech, privacy and equality are considered.
· What do you dislike about it?
The major limitation of Rights theory is tendency to create conflicts between individual rights and collective needs. The right to free speech of person might depends on another person right. The excessive focus on individual rights can lead to selfishness along with societal responsibilities and common good that are ignored.
